I Made a Purchase Abroad and Was Charged the Wrong Exchange Rate – What Should I Do?

Here’s how to check what happened, and what you can do next.

Step 1: Check the Currency You Paid In

When making purchases or withdrawing cash abroad, you might be offered the option to pay in GBP instead of the local currency. This is called Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC), and it almost always results in a poorer exchange rate than if you'd paid in the local currency and let Visa handle the conversion.

If you chose to pay in GBP, the higher exchange rate is part of that service. Unfortunately, this means there’s nothing we can do to recover the difference.

Step 2: Didn't Choose GBP? You May Be Eligible to Raise a Dispute

If you selected the local currency but were still charged in GBP — or weren’t given a choice — you might be able to raise a dispute.

To do this:

  1. Open the Yeeld app
  2. Go to your Account Statement
  3. Tap the transaction in question
  4. Select ‘Dispute Transaction’
  5. Choose: "I’ve been charged an additional fee by a merchant or I’ve been charged for not using a booking"
  6. Complete the form with as much detail as possible

What You’ll Need

You may be asked to provide:

  • A copy of the receipt
  • Proof you selected the local currency (if available)
  • Screenshots or evidence showing there was no currency choice

Important to Know

  • We’ll review the case based on the evidence you provide.
  • Raising a dispute means we’ll try to claim the money back for you — but we can’t guarantee the outcome.
